Janai Norman is a versatile and talented journalist who spent weekend mornings helping inform and entertain viewers for seven years on “Good Morning America.” As a correspondent and reporter, she has covered many of the major news stories over the last two decades including Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan stepping back form the royal family, the death of Jeffrey Epstein, and the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. She was on the scene covering the manhunt for the Brooklyn subway shooter earlier this year, was on the ground in South Carolina covering the Senate race for the network’s 2020 election night coverage, and has covered the COVID-19 pandemic and the protests after the death of George Floyd. Norman has covered the Trump administration, Capitol Hill, and breaking news stories. She has interviewed newsmakers from politicians and astronauts, science and health experts, to celebrities like Kevin Costner, Mary J Blige, Micheal B. Jordan, Shakira, and Cynthia Erivo. She puts her heart into her work and makes it a priority to cover the most important underreported issues of our time, including the maternal mortality crisis facing Black women and the stigma of mental health. Prior to ABC News, Janai worked her way across the country in Columbia, Missouri, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Orlando, Florida as a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor. During this time, she reported on the Pulse nightclub shooting and the Moore, Oklahoma tornado.

A memoir about her Mental Health Journey

Former Good Morning America anchor Janai Norman shares the story behind the smile—from balancing fame and motherhood to the mental health reckoning that saved her life—in this profound memoir of breaking down, breaking open, and breaking free.

At the height of her success, Janai Norman experienced a mental health episode so consuming that one evening, alone with her two small children – she barricaded herself in her office, called her husband back from the grocery store, and ordered an uber to the hospital where she was admitted to the psychiatric ward. There, she was given a new diagnosis – Borderline Personality Disorder.

What follows is an interrogation of self that takes the reader beyond the shiny veneer of daytime television and into not only the murky spaces of buried trauma and self-doubt; the challenge of juggling career demands, motherhood, and self-care; but also the clarity and hope that comes from self-discovery and self-acceptance.

BREAKING is a triumphant story of honoring one’s whole self and choosing to live more fully.
